Recent studies have demonstrated that liquid meal replacements are also effective to control weight and cholesterol level. Dr. James W. Anderson and Dr. Lars H. Hole have conducted a study between soy based liquid meal replacements and milk based liquid meal replacements for weight loss over a period of 12 weeks. The soy group of people was given scan diet daily with fruits and vegetables where as people in the milk group where given slim fast with fruits, vegetables, chicken or lean meat in sufficient quantities. The participants in the study were asked to note down their tolerance level to the meal replacement, the amount of food consumed and the physical activities undertaken by them. The study revealed that the participants lost about 8.5% of their initial body weight and the amount of liquid shakes consumed is less in case of soy group when compared to the milk group. This study clearly brings out the fact that weight loss is more by consuming liquid meal replacements as against the normal medications available in the market for weight loss. The soy group also showed a lower cholesterol level and reduction in triglyceride level as against the milk group which showed no change.
The above study by Dr. Anderson conclusively proves that soy protein is good at lowering cholesterol level along with weight loss, with the milk based shakes effective in weight loss and tolerated more by all people.
